Founded in 1919 as General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) and rebranded as Ally Financial in 2010 following its initial public offering in 2014, the company maintains its headquarters at Ally Detroit Center in Detroit, Michigan, with Ally Bank headquartered in Sandy, Utah, a corporate center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and additional offices across major U.S. cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco; it employs approximately 10,000 people and operates primarily in the United States with historic presence in Canada and Bermuda. Recent developments include the sale of its credit card business, encompassing $2.3 billion in receivables and 1.3 million active cardholders, to CardWorks Inc. and its Merrick Bank subsidiary announced in January 2025; the prior divestiture of its Ally Lending point-of-sale financing unit to Synchrony Financial in March 2024, which covered $2.2 billion in home improvement and health wellness loan receivables; and the 2021 acquisition of Fair Square Financial, rebranded and integrated as Ally Credit Card by 2023 ahead of its subsequent sale.
